Catching up....
We left our quiet haven by the sea...after a pleasant dinner on the sand...not realising how quiet it actually was until we reached the mayhem of Romania’s most popular seaside resort town, Constanta.
The town itself was described by one of our riders as “depressing,” many unimaginative communist era apartment blocks. As we moved away from the city centre, the flat untidy shoreline became lined with seaside apartment blocks, interspersed with car parks and unkempt grassy patches. We were led to one of the HUGE beachside eateries, also side by side. Fortunately it was lunchtime and the holidaymakers prefer to party in the evenings so the 1000 capacity space was wonderfully empty.
The beach wasn’t! Although at the end of the season, one could see that half of humanity would descend upon the shores. One could also see the results of the purchases that must be made at the umpteen small stores that sell children’s floating devices. I suspect the ability to actually swim is limited in these parts. A fellow was offering pretzels and corn cobs to those lazing on the lounges. You could by an apartment for 40 000 euros.
Leaving the sea we once again passed huge fields and 100’s of windmills. The blustery wind that was buffeting us in an annoying fashion, was obviously being put to good use.
Our accommodation on the Danube Delta reminded me of a hunting lodge. The cabins inside were lovely, but the resort needed a cash injection. It was sooooo quiet, but unfortunately very few birds at our patch. Nicko said that the numbers had declined in the 10 yrs that they had been using the facility.
Another dinner in a great location.
Ps. Forgot to mention that we needed to negotiate some traffic jams at Constanta. Nicko had two strategies. We gradually crept past the looooong line on the left of the cars at one hold-up. And the other we lane filtered for zonks. Very polite and accepting drivers. Definitely not in Oz!
