DayFiveBB To Brac

Started to sail to Brac at 7am and breakfast at 8am. Lovely sunny morning and smooth sailing. Another chance to stay up to date with writing tasks. Tony did his washing and hung it along the lines outside our cabin.

At 11.30 we stopped in a small isolated cove and dropped anchor. Time for a swim. Totally delightful. Not quite swimming in the Ord River Dam at sunset, but swimming in the Adriatic with that dramatic coastline of mountains in the background was definitely a close second.

We continued to sail to Brac Island, landing in another picturesque port where we had lunch on board. Our guides gave us an hour to digest lunch before we would start on the day's ride.

3pm we headed off. We had been warned that there were 9 kms of up, like the Hvar ride. Actually, it was more demanding than the Hvar ride. Hats off to the oh-so-fit 40 somethings who can do it with normal bikes.

I was now familiar with the capabilities of the ebike. It operated like a normal bike with a good range of "normal" gears. You could switch the power on or off quite readily. I was now confident to plod along at my own pace in certain conditions, however, I valued the extra assistance the power could give you if needed. This ascent was a doozy and I was delighted to receive that extra boost. It took the strain out of a long climb. Tony was using his bike like a motorcycle...highest setting and keeping up or passing the strong riders. No smelling the roses for him!! There was little habitation along our route, much harsh rocky terrain, the sounds of bells from goat herds and that herbaceous scrub. The day was warm and there were many red faces. But believe it or not, everyone was having a great time!

After a long ascent it was finally time for the descent into Pucisca harbour where our boat had sailed while we were riding. Rather than returning to the boat immediately, we stopped for either an ice-cream or in our case, beers for Tony and Paul and coffees for Marg and I.

After a rushed shower as time had flown, it was dinner on the boat and jovial chatter.

A splendid day.

The consummate rider.

At one rest stop I could hear the tinkling of bells. Behind this rusty, fragile gate was a herd of sheep being tended by the two most weathered women I have ever seen. Would have made a great photo, but I only asked to take a photo of the sheep and they obligingly opened the gate. It was a step back in time.

Ice-creams for some...

... beers for others.

  1. Great to see you swimming in the Adriatic. Lots of beautiful water here in Kakadu, but definitely not for swimming in! Grateful for the pool at our lodge.
