Halifax 3
Blue sky today! When we first ventured out, there was slight chilly breeze but it disappeared as the day wore on.
Walked through a bit of suburbia to reach the Hydrostone neighbourhood. After the Explosion this less-populated area was chosen to be the site of the rapid building of housing to accommodate the 000's left homeless by the blast. It meant that they did not have to remove rubble first. They used a manufactured concrete with the thought that it would not ignite if there was to be another catastrophe!! We met the most delightful ladies in the ubiquitous coffee shop who advised us on the site of a memorial park where a ceremony is held each year to remember the major event. We also encountered a gentleman with a dog that wore boots( to stop the grains of ice-melting salt from sticking between its toes!) who was also very keen to have a chat.
After visiting the memorial...on a hill that looked down upon the area that had suffered the most...we plodded back to downtown via the naval base and shipyard along the Harbour. Diverting a little brought us to an older neighbourhood with some interesting churches from the 1700's. There was quite a strong German presence here as well.
Returned to the "Coffee Cabin" for more soup...hearty chicken this time...and then to Pier 21 where the Immigration Museum was located. Canada has been very accommodating with their immigration policy.
Getting dark and decided not to go back to the house but to continue on to "Salty's." This seafood bar/restaurant that looked out on the water, had been recommended by our host. Attended to by Ally, who had just graduated from uni where she had her 4 years paid for by a basketball scholarship, Heather was able to indulge in a much-anticipated lobster and I feasted on mussels. Chris was content to try another local beer.
Taxi home.
