Halifax 4

Well actually, more like... "South Shore!"
When our host visited on the day of our arrival, he indicated that he would be pleased to take us on a day trip, considering that we did not have a car.   True to his word, Laurie arrived at 7.45am with his 4x4 to introduce us to the shoreline south of Halifax.

Forty minutes away was Peggy's Cove, featured on EVERY brochure about Nova Scotia. It features a striking lighthouse perched on massive granite boulders. With its cute bay it was certainly picturesque. However, it would not have been my pick for the highlight of the day. The South Shore under snow was GORGEOUS.

After travelling through kms of birch and pine forest, without traffic, we spent the rest of the day hugging the indented shoreline with cute and dramatic bays and coves continually delighting us. We stopped at a small cafe where the floor was concrete to cater for the wet clime. A few stops that included memorials, old whaling station sites and a former trestle/stone bridge that is now a walking trail...sound familiar?
To Mahone Bay to visit friends who operated a furniture- making store specialising in pieces made from local timbers. And a wander of the popular tourist town.
Our final destination was Lunenburg, one of only two UNESCO Listed cities in Canada, the other being Quebec. The unique German/Swiss/French- influenced architecture certainly set this town, perched on a slope next to a lovely inlet, apart from the rest. Here we met Laurie's cousin, Paul, and a couple who were long-time friends. After visiting a rum distillery ( where some of the rum is installed on a dinghy where the rocking motion of the boat contributes to its maturity!!) we then adjourned to a pub with a view. Drinks and local food specialties later we said our farewells to drive along the highway back to Halifax. Home at 6.30pm.  A very special day.
